Even though the 2020 presidential election is three years away, speculation is already running rampant over which Democrats (or Republicans) could possibly run against President Donald Trump when he is up for re-election.
Among the name of potential contenders for 2020 is a rather interesting one. According to CNN, MSNBC “Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough might be running for president in 2020.
The CNN article, written by Chris Cillizza, is partly based off a New York Magazine cover story on Scarborough. The story cited White House sources suggesting Scarborough’s own presidential ambitions at least partly explain some of his current criticisms of Trump and the Republican Party.
Responding to those allegations, Scarborough claimed that the Trump administration was “misrepresenting” them, but didn’t actually rule out the possibility of running.
“Scarborough and Brzezinski said the White House is misrepresenting their motivations, though they didn’t rule out that Scarborough might be interested in running for president in the future,” the article stated.
If Scarborough is really among those considering a 2020 run, that is absolutely hilarious. He stands absolutely no chance against Trump, and the fact that he would even think that he could win is laughable.
“If you look at where Joe came from, he has no business being where he is, and that is because he has this internal drive that all politicians have where you look in the mirror and say, ‘I should be leading people,’” an unnamed source close to Scarborough told New York Magazine.
In an interesting twist to this story, Oliviz Nuzzi, the author of the New York Magazine piece, went on Twitter to push back against Cillizza’s storn on CNN, simply stating “As the author of the story, let me just say: no, he isn’t.”

There has been no word that the Democrats are actively courting Scarborough, but we wouldn’t be surprised. Right now the Democrats have no leader. After years of domination by the Clintons and Team Obama, they are looking around for anyone who could actually lead the party to victory.
Even if Scarborough, a former Republican congressman from Florida, isn’t running, it truly is a sad state of affairs for the Democrats if they are so desperate that they will interpret any statement as someone indicating they will run against Trump in 2020.
The Democrats clearly have no idea where to look for the next leader of their party. If after six months they still have no idea how to move forward from 2016, then Trump’s 2020 re-election got that much easier.
